Studio M* Artist Residencies are now open for proposals. Artist residencies can be incredibly nurturing and expansive for creative and intellectual practices. We are interested in residencies that involve creative, intellectual, eco/social action, and well being.
If you are interested in developing an residency/lab experience we are open for conversations. Residencies can be individually focused or collaborative. In addition, as Artistic Co-directors we are open to collaborative possibilities and have many years of combined mentoring experience.
Studio M* is currently located in an historical home space run by My Inner Harbour and located in the Old City Quarter of Nanaimo, BC, Canada. This is a shared creative space that has in-house and yard installation possibilities.
Shared use of our artist studio space (16 x 18 ft) for a maximum of 2 weeks with the possibility of negotiating intermittent stays, and some use of art supplies. Living accommodation is not provided but we are happy to help you secure accommodation for your stay. The residency requires a short stay membership with My Inner Harbour. Studio M* itself operates within the framework of a gift economy (see attached pdf for details).
Attending and hosting Artist Residencies have allowed us to expand our practices and to connect with more artists. Studio M* began offering artist residencies in 2019 at its first location in Calgary Alberta. COVID interrupted the residencies and we began offering them again in 2023 in the Nanaimo, BC location. Our personal experiences with artist residencies began in 1995 when Barbara did her first residency in Victoria, BC with Exchange Gallery and Studios to work on her collaborative Sisters project. In 2007, she utilized the residency process at Artscape Gibraltar Point to creatively begin her arts-based dissertation. Her residencies at Artscape continued for 7 more years and included facilitation of artists residencies with art students. We have been involved in Artists-in-Residence programs with communities that have brought us in to co-create and facilitate new growth in their communities.
